Building a Backyard Chicken Coop – 3 Grave Mistakes to Avoid

2 min read

If you go out to buy a backyard chicken coop, it can turn out to be an expensive affair. Therefore, most people are resorting to build their own chicken coop. It turns out to be cheap and also becomes a fun activity. So if you are one of those who have just decided to build your own backyard chicken coop, I have just listed down 3 grave mistakes that you must avoid.

No Plan – You are on the right track if you have a concrete layout of your coop before hand. In case you don’t, you’ll just end up wasting your time and material into something unproductive. Preparing a proper layout of positioning and measurements is the only way and the foremost step in this process. Not just the plan but also gathering the exact amount of material is also a coinciding measure you should take care of.

No Protection – The design should be such that it should provide proper protection to the chicken. You must consider aspects like cold winds, rain and predators when we talk about protection. A light weight coop with loose building material can be easily destroyed by dogs or rodents.

No Ventilation – A lot of people overlook the ventilation aspect in the process of making an over protective coop. A good cross ventilation system must be present in the design for the chicken to breathe fresh air. The waste that they produce emits ammonia gas, which has to be flushed out of the coop continuously. Ammonia gas can be dangerous for the chicken’s health. Therefore, ventilation is a must for any backyard chicken coop.

Designing and building your own backyard chicken coop can be fun. It can also turn into a disaster if you do not follow some ‘don’ts’ in the process. However, still if you even take care of these 3 things, you have won half the battle.
