Do you know what actually stands behind this strange name – “playdough”? What really is this substance which is known by people, and especially, kids all over the world? What is this material which makes the next generation of creative people?

By definition you can say that it is a modeling compound used by children for arts and crafts. But that is the boring wikipedia-style definition. Playdough was invented about 80 years ago – in the 1930s in the United States of America. And originally it was meant for cleaning wallpapers! Although it`s main ingredients – water, flour, silicone oil and boric acid have not changed a lot over the years, it`s main purpose is totally different now. Playdough changed it`s because of some children who decided to use the wallpaper cleaner for arts and crafts. And guess what – 20 years later playdough was already marketed and sold in every toy store! Playdough`s popularity increased day by day and it became known in every school in USA and later on also the rest of the world (ok, maybe not in the North Pole). And did you know that in 2003 it was titled as “the toy of the century”?!

Nowadays we know playdough a easy-to-use and easy-to-make at home modeling compound. It`s incredible characteristics allow children to freely express their creativity by creating fantasy characters or anything else. Playdough is non-toxic and also edible! (But if you buy the playdough at a store you should still check it`s ingredients – you can be sure only about homemade playdough!) You do not have to be afraid if children eat it – playdough consists only from basically water, food colors, flour and salt! Although it is not advisable to actually use it as food because the playdough contains a lot of salt. And it is so simple to make at home that you do not even have to go to a store! You can be creative when making it, and your children can make whatever they want from your homemade playdough!

For example, here is the simplest of all – the traditional homemade playdough recipe:

Ingredients:

* 2 cups of baking soda

* 1.5 cups of water

* 1 cup of corn starch

Instructions:

1. Mix the ingredients until the mixture is smooth.

2. Boil it in a pot until it gets thick.

Congratulations! You have made your own playdough in about 4 minutes!
